Legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis presented Martin Scorsese with a Best Director honor from the National Board of Review during NBR’s gala ceremony on Thursday night in New York City, and, while accepting, Scorsese hinted at the possibility of Day-Lewis’ return to acting.

When Scorsese accepted his NBR honor, he thanked Day-Lewis, saying, “Thank you, Daniel. To receive [this Best Director] honor [from Day-Lewis] is an honor itself… We did two films together, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.” Scorsese made a final remark before moving on to his acceptance speech, addressing Day-Lewis and the room, saying “Maybe there’s time for one more [film together].

In 2017, after starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis formally retired from acting in a statement to Variety, saying, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Day-Lewis, 66, was seen earlier this year exiting a meeting with Jim Sheridan and Steven Spielberg, both of whom directed him in Oscar-winning performances in My Left Foot and Lincoln, respectively. Day-Lewis is the only person to receive three Best Actor Oscars. His third was for his role as Daniel Plainview in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.

Scorsese, who has numerous rumored projects in development, spoke to the Los Angeles Times earlier this week about a project he hopes to shoot later this year — a present-day-set 80-minute film about Jesus that he hopes will “make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion.”

Scorsese is also attached to an adaptation of The Wager, a novel by Killers of the Flower Moon author David Grann, with Leonardo DiCaprio on board to star and produce.

Spielberg, on the other hand, who met with Day-Lewis last week, is set to direct a new movie based on Steve McQueen’s character from the 1968 thriller with Bradley Cooper, whom Spielberg produced Maestro with, in the lead role.
