Mia Goth has had one hell of a year. The now-scream queen entered the A-list last March when A24 released X, the first in Ti West’s trilogy of the same name. In the film, Goth worked double duty, playing protagonist Maxine and antagonist Pearl, and subsequently starred in a spinoff following Pearl, set in the past, for which she received acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Earlier today, Deadline reported that Goth had been cast in Blade, set to star alongside Mahershala Ali, who plays the titular character. The film has recently undergone major rewrites and a change in directors, with little plot information being available at this time. The film is now to be directed by Yann Demage (Lovecraft Country), with Michael Starrburry rewriting the film’s script.

Marvel Studios declined to comment on this casting.

The character of Blade first appeared in Tomb of Dracula #10 in 1973 and was created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan and quickly became a fan-favorite character. The character rose to higher fame in the 90s when he was portrayed by Wesley Snipes in Blade from New Line Cinema, which received two subsequent sequels. For Goth who is currently in production on Maxxine, this role is one in a list of many from the last year in which she was a leading character in a major studio horror film. From X to Pearl to Infinity Pool to final talks to star in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein alongside Oscar Issac and Andrew Garfield, it’s clear that Mia Goth is here to stay.

Blade arrives in theaters on September 6, 2024.
