Since the Ahsoka series was announced, fans speculated on what it would cover and who would be in it, and as we’ve gotten closer to its release, more details about the series have been revealed, including the appearance of a certain heir to a certain empire. Once we knew that Ahsoka would partially serve as a continuation of the story from the final episode of Star Wars: Rebels, people began wondering who would play Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action, and it seems there was only one possibility. Lars Mikkelsen, who previously portrayed the character in Rebels, was confirmed to be the face behind the live-action adaptation during the series panel at Star Wars Celebration.

The character of Grand Admiral Thrawn first appeared in the expanded universe novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn in 1991 and has quickly become a fan-favorite character ever since. Thrawn is a member of the Chiss species, recognized for his blue skin, sharp face, and red eyes. When the Galactic Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire, Thrawn pledged his loyalty to Emperor Palpatine and quickly rose the ranks in the navy, reaching the title of Grand Admiral, given to him by Palpatine. In modern-era Star Wars, Thrawn is most known for his appearance in Star Wars: Rebels, where he was the primary antagonist of the series’ fourth and final season. At the end of that season, he was stuck on the bridge of his command ship alongside Ezra Bridger (now played by Eman Esfandi in Ahsoka), being carried by Purrgil in hyperspace to the unknown regions of the Star Wars galaxy.
